The Terrasan Group

The Terrasan Group consists of various subsidiaries, with interests in pelagic fishing, the aquaculture industry and property. Our fishing activities relate to the catching and further processing of sardine, anchovy and pilchard, mainly along the West Coast with processing taking place at our factory in St Helena Bay. Our mariculture activities include abalone farming at Hermanus and Gansbaai in the Western Cape Overberg Region, mussel farming at Saldanha Bay on the West Coast.

The Group’s property investment comprises of an office complex in Plattekloof, Cape Town, a fishing equipment store and workshop, as well as a factory for the processing of mussels, both situated in Velddrif as well as a factory for the processing of sardines, anchovy and pilchards in the St Helena Bay area. The Terrasan Group provides its subsidiaries with centralised secretarial, management, HR, IT and accounting services from an office located in Plattekloof, Cape Town. Furthermore, it also provides treasury and property services to the Group.

Aqunion

Aqunion is one of the world’s leading abalone farming businesses. Headquartered in Hermanus, South Africa, the business represents a union of three well-known South African abalone businesses, namely Roman Bay Sea Farm, Aquafarm Development and SPP Canning. Aqunion offers a full aquaculture value chain, including abalone farming, processing, marketing and export of both wild and farmed South African abalone. The foundation’s of Aqunion were laid in 1994 with the establishment in Hermanus of Terrasan’s first abalone farm. In 1998 this farm became the first in South Africa to export commercial quantities of farmed abalone to Hong Kong. Over time we have developed a strong and reliable sales network in Asia. Our sales are focused on Asian markets and we currently supply countries such as China, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia.

Marifeed

Terrasan has a 51% shareholding in Marifeed (Pty) Ltd, an aquafeed manufacturer situated in Hermanus that places a high value on research and continuously strives to improve the performance of their feed. Marifeed manufactures Abfeed, an advanced aquafeed produced to a specialised formulation, which improves the growth of abalone cost-effectively. Abfeed has exceptional water stability and is used successfully by most South African abalone farmers, sometimes in combination with kelp.

Saldanha Protein

Terrasan’s newest investment, Saldanha Protein was established in 1905 as the Saldanha Bay Canning Company, and has become a recognised force in the canned fish industry. Saldanha Protein creates one of South Africa’s favourite canned fish products, Saldanha Pilchards. In addition to this, the factory which produces canned fish products for the South African market also produces high quality Fish Meal and Fish Oil for local and export markets. The company’s facility holds HACCP accreditation for health and quality, as well as ISO 22000 certification – the first food processing factory in South Africa to achieve it. Currently the factory has the production capability of 20 tons of raw fish per hour in the cannery and 50 tons of raw fish per hour in the fish meal plant. With decades of success in the fishing industry, Saldanha Protein fits in perfectly within the Terrasan group of companies.
